What are signs of suspension trouble?
Not only does a healthy suspension provide smooth driving, it also boosts safety by helping to keep all four wheels on the ground during a collision. At the first sign of a suspension issue, you'll want to bring your vehicle to the shop for an inspection. Here are seven common signs that you need suspension repair.
Doesn't Pass the Bounce Test
You can do a quick test to gain a better understanding of your suspension's condition. To begin, make sure that your car is securely parked and not at risk of rolling. Then, head to the front end and use all of your muscle to press down on it. Rock it twice and release. Next, go to the back of your car and repeat this step on the rear. After letting go, your vehicle should only rock two or three times on its own. If it rocks more than this, then suspension trouble could be brewing.
One Corner Appears Low
A damaged spring can cause the vehicle to sit lower in one corner. Also, with a faulty spring, the vehicle is likely to make clunking sounds whenever it goes over a bump.
Drifting/Swaying
If you're driving at a safe speed, it shouldn't seem like you're drifting or swaying when navigating sharp corners. But if you do get this sensation, then a faulty suspension could be to blame.
Bouncy Driving
One of the most clear-cut signs of a suspension problem is that your vehicle starts bouncing excessively whenever you drive over a rough patch in the road.
Leaking/Visible Damage
If oil has started leaking out onto your shocks, then you're probably going to need to replace them.
Braking Issues
A failing suspension can make it seem like you're lunging forward at a downward angle while braking. Suspension problems can also cause your vehicle to take longer to come to a complete stop after you've commenced the braking process.
Bald Spots on Tires
Suspension issues can cause tire tread to wear down unevenly. Consequently, bald spots could develop on your tires.
