For your vehicle to dependably fire up, your alternator needs to be healthy. If there's a problem with your alternator, the battery's power reserve could run empty and leave you stranded. Warning Signs of Alternator Failure
One of the most familiar signs of alternator trouble is a dead battery. When you put a new battery in your vehicle, it should work reliably for a minimum of three years, if not quite a bit longer. If your battery dies sooner, then alternator trouble could be to blame---unless you forgot to turn off your headlights! Another common indication of an alternator issue is an illuminated dashboard warning light. This light may read ALT or GEN, or could come on in the shape of a little glowing battery. Whenever a warning light turns on, it's important to promptly identify and address the issue that is triggering it.
Problems with electrical accessories can also mean that the alternator is malfunctioning. In modern vehicles, the computer can usually determine which electrical accessories should first have their power supply reduced when there's trouble with the alternator. This saves power for the car's most important electrical needs, but can cause issues with less essential accessories like power seats. A failing alternator can also cause headlights to act erratically. As headlights dim or flicker, it can create a safety issue if you have to drive at night on roads that don't have street lamps. Another way a bad alternator could cause a safety hazard is if your car stalls out in traffic due to spark plugs not receiving enough power.
