Quick Tips for Preventing a Tire Blowout
On an annual basis, tire blowouts cause thousands of accidents. Fortunately, there are certain precautions you can take to reduce your risk of a blowout occurring. By keeping up with tire maintenance, such as tire rotation, you can help to prevent a blowout. At Brookside Auto Rx, we're highly experienced with conducting tire maintenance and tire repair. And if you need new tires, we've got you covered for that too.
Ways to Reduce the Risk of a Tire Blowout
A simple way to help prevent blowouts is to be sure that you're driving with proper tire pressure. Generally, tire pressure needs to be somewhere between 30 and 35 psi, though you'll want to check for your precise specifications and then inflate your tires as required. If you see your TPMS warning light flash on, then you'll want to promptly check your tire pressure.
As tires wear out, they should be replaced so that you have a safe level of tread and aren't at a higher risk of a blowout. When tread reaches 4/32", you'll want to start thinking about replacing your tires. If your tread wears down to 2/32", then you'll want to get new tires as soon as you can. When driving with low tread, tires are prone to heating up faster, which can make a blowout more likely to occur.
You can also reduce your blowout risk by getting tire rotation as needed. Generally, tire rotation is supposed to be done at some point between 6,000 and 8,000 miles, which helps to keep tread wearing down evenly. When tread wears down in an uneven fashion, there's a greater risk of a blowout.
